Not all useful biology belongs in the water column.

In planted tanks, shrimp systems and natural aquariums, much of the real ecological work happens across the substrate, hardscape, leaf litter and root zone. These surfaces support complex communities of bacteria, algae, fungi and microscopic grazers collectively known as the benthos.

Foundation Benthic shifts microbial feeding toward these surfaces, encouraging a slower, more layered form of biological development.

It supports:

  • Benthic Biofilm Development – Encourages microbial colonisation across substrate, wood, stone, leaves and other submerged surfaces.
  • Natural Grazing – Helps create nutrient-rich feeding surfaces for shrimp, fry, snails and grazing fish.

Particulate organic material naturally favours surface-attached microbial communities because microbes colonise those particles and use extracellular enzymes to access their carbon. In other words, the bugs move onto the food instead of waiting for dinner to dissolve past them.

Usage and Safety:

How to Use bio-Boost Foundation Benthic

  1. Add no more than one scoop per 50 L once weekly in an established aquarium.
  2. Sprinkle it directly across the substrate, hardscape or planted areas. It may also be added near moderate flow to distribute it more broadly across the aquarium floor.
  3. Allow approximately 48 to 72 hours for the initial material to settle and microbial activity to begin.
  4. Continue normal feeding, filtration and maintenance. Foundation Benthic supports the aquarium’s ecology. It does not replace it.

For new aquariums without livestock, use one scoop per 25 L up to twice weekly while the system establishes.

Do not combine a full dose with other concentrated prebiotic powders. More microbial food does not create a better ecosystem. Sometimes it merely creates cloudy soup with ambitions.

The Science Behind Foundation Benthic

Foundation Benthic uses a particulate, surface-oriented formulation designed to carry microbial activity into the benthic regions of the aquarium.

Benthic Feed Blend

Soy Husk

A fibrous, slowly processed carbon source that settles readily onto surfaces. Its physical structure provides both microbial fuel and additional real estate for colonisation.

Unlike rapidly soluble sugars, soy husk must be colonised and enzymatically broken down over time. This produces a slower and more spatially focused biological response.

Kelp

Durvillaea potatorum

A natural source of complex polysaccharides, trace minerals and varied organic compounds.

Kelp broadens the available microbial feed profile while contributing material that is processed more gradually than purified sugars or soluble fibres.

Spirulina

A nutrient-dense microalgal biomass containing proteins, pigments, minerals and biologically active compounds.

In Foundation Benthic, spirulina helps enrich the developing grazing layer rather than functioning merely as a water-column feed.

Brewer’s Yeast

Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Provides proteins, B vitamins, beta-glucans, minerals and postbiotic compounds that support microbial activity and ecological diversity.

Calcium Bentonite

A fine mineral clay that helps carry the formulation onto surfaces while contributing mineral content and adsorptive capacity.

It also gives the blend somewhere sensible to settle, rather than letting every fine ingredient wander around the aquarium like it has forgotten why it entered the room.

Each strain was selected to contribute overlapping functions including biofilm development, extracellular enzyme production, organic matter processing, nutrient mobilisation and microbial competition.

Pseudomonas fluorescens

A versatile biofilm coloniser that supports organic matter breakdown and the recycling of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus.

Bacillus megaterium

Helps mobilise bound phosphorus, improving nutrient availability within biofilms and substrate ecosystems.

The phosphate-solubilising capacity documented in B. megaterium is one of the clearest functional additions to the revised consortium.

Bacillus amyloliquefaciens

Supports robust biofilm development while producing extracellular enzymes and compounds that help limit opportunistic microbes.

Members of this group are documented producers of enzymes, exopolysaccharides and antimicrobial compounds, although exact activity remains strain-dependent because microbes enjoy contractual fine print.

Bacillus licheniformis

Produces a broad range of enzymes that assist with the breakdown of proteins and other complex organic material.

Bacillus pumilus

Helps process detritus and plant-derived material through the production of degradative enzymes.

Bacillus subtilis

FAQ

Will bio-Boost Foundation make my water cloudy?

Not typically. bio-Boost Foundation does not cause persistent cloudiness but a temporary haze may appear after dosing as the microbes become active, but this will clear as they establish and integrate into your aquarium’s ecosystem. However, if there is an excessive amount of organic matter in the water, cloudiness may persist. Performing 50% water changes every 48 hours can help resolve this issue.

Can I use Foundation with other bacterial products like bottled nitrifying bacteria?

Yes! bio-Boost Foundation is designed to complement nitrifying bacteria, not replace them. It enhances microbial diversity and supports long-term stability, working alongside other beneficial bacteria in your tank. However, it is not recommended to use with additional prebiotic supplement powders (such as Bacter AE), as this may cause unwanted bacterial blooms.

How long does it take to see results?

Results vary depending on tank conditions, but microbial activation and biofilm development typically starts within a few days. Visible improvements in water clarity, microbial activity, and fish behavior should become noticeable within 1-2 weeks of regular dosing.

Can I overdose bio-Boost Foundation?

A double dose can be used safely in a new aquarium to accelerate biofilm establishment. However, overdosing beyond this is not recommended, as excess microbial activity could lead to oxygen depletion in poorly aerated tanks. If an overdose occurs, performing 50% water changes every 48 hours will help stabilize conditions.
