Nettle

Nettle Leaf Powder

What is Nettle?

Nettle, commonly known as Stinging Nettle (urtica dioica), is a nutrient packed plant with a long history of use in animal feed, including fish diets. It's known for its rich nutritional profile and natural health benefits, making it an excellent addition to our fish feed.

Why Nettle works for us

Nettle isn’t just a traditional herbal remedy—it’s a science-backed powerhouse that brings an array of benefits to your fish. Here’s why we’ve made it a key ingredient in our formulations:

  • Packed with Vitamins: Nettle is loaded with vitamins A, C, and K, which support immune function, promote tissue repair, and encourage healthy growth.
  • Mineral Rich: Bursting with essential minerals like iron, calcium, magnesium, and potassium, nettle plays a vital role in fish metabolism, bone density, and enzymatic functions.
  • Immune Booster: Thanks to its bioactive compounds like flavonoids and antioxidants, nettle helps fortify the immune system, keeping your fish resilient and healthy.
  • Natural Colour Enhancement: With its high chlorophyll and carotenoid content, nettle naturally enhances the vibrant colours of your fish, making their hues truly shine.

With nettle, we’re blending tradition with science to give your fish the nutrition they deserve and the vibrancy you’ll love to see.

How we process Nettle

On-site, we process dried nettle by blending and sieving out the tough and inedible fibrous matter. This improves digestibility, boosts nutrient density, and ensures a finer texture for seamless integration into our formulations.

Sustainability and Ethics

Abundant and renewable:

Nettle is a naturally abundant and fast growing plant. It is widely considered a weed, and grows with minimal fertilisation or human input.

Did you know?

  • Ancient Use as Food and Fabric: Nettle has been used for centuries as a food source and to make fabric. In fact, during World War I, nettle fibres were woven into cloth as a cotton alternative due to shortages.
  • Packed with Protein: Nettle contains more protein than many other leafy greens, making it a surprising but excellent addition to fish diets. It's like spinach but better!
  • Nature’s Fertilizer: Nettle leaves are often used in organic gardening as a natural fertilizer or compost tea, thanks to their rich mineral content.
  • A Pollinator Paradise: Nettle is a host plant for several butterfly and moth species, including the Small Tortoiseshell and Peacock butterflies, making it a vital part of many ecosystems.
  • Medicinal Marvel: Nettle has been used in traditional medicine worldwide to treat everything from arthritis to hay fever, thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antihistamine properties.
  • Eco-Friendly Weed Control: It’s said that planting nettle can help keep some invasive weeds at bay by competing for resources, making it a useful plant for sustainable farming.

FAQ

Isn't Stinging Nettle hazardous?

Good question! While raw nettle does have tiny hairs that can sting and irritate skin, the drying and processing methods we use completely neutralize this effect. Once dried, blended, and sieved, the stinging properties are eliminated, leaving behind a safe, nutrient-rich ingredient that’s perfect for fish feed. So, no stings—just benefits!
